Considerations Prior to Making a Request for Assistance

Have any of the following been put in place?

  • Language and communication support strategies: see Reflective Tools for Enriching Communication
  • Classroom or nursery environment e.g. visual supports
  • Please include feedback on what has already been put in place when completing a Request for Assistance form.

Are the parents/carers concerned?

Consider any support needs in relation to home routines.

What are the child/young person’s views at this time in relation to their communication and or support need?

Is the child/young person motivated with the support already available at home/nursery/school?

Have you considered other agencies? e.g. ASL service, EAL, CCH, CAMHS, Educational Psychology, Children 1st, Barnardos, Family Solutions, Homelink?

Has a Child Planning Meeting been planned to discuss support and onward referral?

Taking into account the child’s general level of ability, do you feel there is potential for change in relation to their communication skills?

What is the impact of the communication or eating/drinking and swallowing need on the child’s well being and function?

What are your expectations of the service at this time?

  • Advice and discussion with the SLT
  • Activities/resources for use in nursery or school. Can you identify a member of staff to take this forward?
  • Support and tailored advice for parents/carers
  • Joint goal setting/IEP
  • Direct intervention
